Montanha Dourada, or Golden Mountain, is an unbelievably delicious treat in Portuguese dessert making. It is a widely popular and very traditional dessert that is perfect for those with a sweet tooth like myself and is very easy to make, without all the fuss of a complicated dish. One of the best parts about this dessert is just how great it looks when done, and as you can see in the picture is what gives this Portuguese treat its name. Try it out and tell us what you think!
Ingredients:
For the Base:
6 egg whites
1 pinch of salt
2 small drops of lemon juice
6 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon butter
Sweet Egg Topping:
6 egg yolks
6 tablespoons sugar
Directions:
1) Preheat the oven to 190 degrees fahrenheit.
2) Pour the egg whites in an beater machine with a pinch of salt and the drops of lemon juice.
2) Whip the egg whites with the egg beater machine until it is well beaten.
3) Then begin to add the sugar in the beater at the same speed.
4) Place it in a platter with the butter spread at the bottom and egg whites on top, and let it cook until the surface has goldened.
5) While it is cooking, prepare the sweet egg topping by mixing the yolks and sugar in a saucepan and bringing it to a boil while constantly mixing.
6) After the egg yolk mixture is a syrup consistency and soon as you see bubbles, turn off the heat.
7) Take the egg whites in the platter out of the oven once browned, and pour the egg yolk syrup on top like in the picture, making it look like a golden mountain.
8) Cover it and place in the fridge to cool off.
9) Once cooled, serve and enjoy!
