Figs are one of the most typical ingredients in Portuguese cuisine. Figos Cristalizados, or Crystallized figs, are a unique traditional Portuguese dessert perfect for the summer months. They are a really simple and easy dessert to make that are sure to impress. There is no fuss involved in trying to make these and all you need to make these delicious sweets are sugar and figs.
Ingredients:
25 figs
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
2 tablespoons powdered sugar
Directions:
1) Wash the figs well.
2) In a saucepan, add 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water and bring it to a boil.
3) Once it has been boiling for a minute, add the figs one by one.
4) After boiling for an hour, turn down the heat and let it simmer for 4-6 hours, until their is a reduced sugar syrup.
5) Once there is a sugar syrup, take out the figs and let them dry for 2 hours.
6) Now add the rest of the water and sugar to the saucepan with the figs and bring it to a boil again.
6) After half an hour, turn down the heat and let it simmer for another 4-6 hours, as the figs absorb the sugar.
7) Once sugar syrup has reduced again, take out the figs and let them dry for another hour.
8) Once the figs have dried, dip them in the powdered sugar, and serve.
