Apple Tart (Tarte de Maçã)

‘Tarte de Maçã’, or Portuguese Apple Tart, is a signature of Portuguese dessert making. It combines fresh apples with a flaky crust and a slightly citrus lemon twist, to make a sweet and simple tart. This is a simple and quick dessert recipe for anytime that is perfect for serving with some ice cream and is always sure to please.

Ingredients:
6 fresh apples
4 teaspoons lemon juice
2/3 cup sugar
1 egg yolk
4 tablespoons water
1 Puff Pastry Pie Shape base with crust

Directions:
1) Preheat the oven to 355 º F.
2) Peel and slice two apples. Place them in a saucepan with 2 teaspoons lemon juice, 1/3 cup sugar, and the water.
3) Bring to the boil, turn off the heat, and let it simmer until it is a syrupy consistency.
4) Meanwhile cut the remaining apples into thin slices and drizzle them with some lemon juice to avoid them from darkening. Set them aside.
5) Remove the saucepan from the heat.
6) Roll out the puff pastry in a pie shape, and add half of the apple reduction from the saucepan to the bottom of the pastry.
7) Spread the apple slices in a circle on the reduction. Pour the rest of the reduction on top of the slices.
8) Sprinkle the top with the remaining sugar and brush with the egg yolk.
9) Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes or until the top and crust have become golden brown.
10) Take out of the oven and let it cool for 5-10 minutes. Serve.
