Prego no Pão

Prego no Pão has been the most popular and widely eaten sandwich in Portuguese cuisine for many years. This is not just because it is an easy sandwich to make on the go but because it is also so delicious. The combination of cooking the garlic with the steak adds unbelievable popping smell and flavor. Despite how many times I have eaten this sandwich, I find it impossible to get sick of because it is just so good. I am sure you will enjoy this sandwich just as I and many have for so long, so go ahead and enjoy!

Ingredients:
1/2 lb sirloin steak, cut thinly
5 tablespoons of butter
6 garlic cloves, thinly sliced (or to taste)
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon coarse sea salt to taste
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 Portuguese style sandwich buns, toasted

Directions:
1) Lay out the steaks on a cutting board or other flat surface.
2) Lay slices of garlic on on side of the steaks.
3) Using a tenderizing mallet, “nail” the garlic to the steak by pounding the slices into the meat.
4) Repeat on the reverse side of the steaks.
5) Melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium-high heat.
6) Fry each steak in the butter for barely two to three minutes, turning once.
7) Transfer to a dish and cover.
8) Melt the rest of the butter in the same skillet.
9) Add the onions and saute until they are golden.
10) Return the beef to the onions and sauce and heat through for 30 seconds.
11) Serve on the toasted sandwich rolls, enjoy!
